"When I first opened the book, I thought I might find repeat information as in " The Art of Raising a Puppy". Once I started reading it, I realized this is an incredible informative, detailed "how to" book with solutions for almost every common, or challenging dog issue. For the price we paid, the book is beyond a "best value" information source. The chapters discussing relationships among mankind and wild lives, the interaction between human and dogs at spiritual level are especially inspiring and insightful.

Some negative reviews I read have made me wonder if those reviewers had ever, indeed, read the book. One complained about Monks' approach is too harsh. It is exact the opposite from Monks' teaching. Monks' could not stress enough for all dog owners to respect and love their dogs, and to build sound, caring, trusting relationships between dogs and owners.

Personally, I think it is best to read this book with "The Art of Raising a puppy", the two books complement each other, and provide comprehensive, in depth, integral knowledges for all dog owners."

  • A sensible, balanced, kind, and effective approach to raising and training a companion/family dog. It is ridiculous to even suggest that this book advocates the use of force, and it is unfortunate, because this along with "The Art of Raising a Puppy," also by the Monks of New Skete, is one of the best books available for the casual owner. These two books would be perfect for the first-time dog owner, or someone raising a puppy for the first time. In fact, it would be great if folks would read these books BEFORE making the final decision to get a dog or puppy, as the Monks do a great job of describing in a realistic way, the commitment of time, money and energy needed to have a happy, healthy canine family member. These are not books about how to train your dog for competitive obedience, they are about creating a happy, well-behaved member of your family. One of my favorite things about the Monks is that they put a lot of time into their dogs, and they expect their dogs to integrate into their lives in a way that many people don't. These dogs don't live in a kennel or tied up in a yard. They are actual companions. Each Brother has a dog that he raises, and the puppies and dogs are meant to be a part of life at the monastery. The dogs are expected to lay near the desk or be present at the Brother's workspace, and move about the monastery while they go about their chores. The dogs go to dinner with the monks and are expected to lay quietly without begging. In other words, the brothers and the dogs are partners. While I use some clicker training when I teach tracking (and some fun tricks), and other positive-reinforcement training with my dog as we do various dog sports, these books are always the foundation of my program. At the heart of it, I want my dog to be in my life and a full part of my life. I use the Monks method of crate training puppies, and the puppy is always house trained in about 2 weeks. I also use the monks method of having the puppy "tethered" to me (a leash clipped to my belt loop) and having him get used to following me around as I move around the house during the day. When I am not actively with him or watching him, he is in his crate napping. All of my dogs trained this way are calm, wonderful companions and do well when it is time for more active obedience training for competition. Get this book, you won't regret it.

  • While I like some aspects of the book, I’ve found the disciplining to be counterproductive with my dog. I adopted a German Shepherd/Mastiff mix from our local shelter and to say “he has a mind of his own” is an understatement.

I got him at 9 months old and am his third owner, meaning I’m pretty much the first person he’s had to consistently take orders from and it has been quite the journey (5 months later).

Doing the “scruff and shake” on a dog this size is a little intimidating. And using that method of disciplining has helped me with nothing. In fact I find it to be counterproductive for my dog. Anytime I discipline him using any kind of hostile force, is equivalent to taking two steps backwards in his progression. Why would anyone want to listen to some jerk that feels as if it’s acceptable to put his hands on you?

Instead positive reinforcement works much better with him. It doesn’t breach any sort of trust that he has with me, and being his third owner, it’s a no-brainer that trust is paramount when bonding with a new dog or any dog that has little experience co-existing in a human household.

After this book I grabbed a copy of The Dog Whisperer by Paul Owen, not that Cesar guy. It’s a much better book IMO and so far has proven to be more effective than the book the monks wrote.
  • I have trained my fair share of dogs and have done so effectively. I have used many resources in the process. Of all of them, How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners is by far the best! Most dog training literature consists of results-oriented recipe books. How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend delves deeply into the fundamentals of both human and canine psychology and the beauty and complexity of their inter-relationship. The Monks of New Skete do not simply instruct you regarding the "How" of dog training, they go further and explain the "Why." Frustrating behaviors that your "best friend" manifests make so much more sense and understanding your dog's behaviors enables you to deal with them effectively. I wish that I had read this book years ago.
