The irresistible companion to the #1 New York Times bestseller Dumplin’, now a Netflix feature film starring Danielle Macdonald and Jennifer Aniston, and a soundtrack by Dolly Parton!
Millie Michalchuk has gone to fat camp every year since she was a little girl. Not this year. This year she has new plans to chase her secret dream of being a newscaster—and to kiss the boy she’s crushing on.
Callie Reyes is the pretty girl who is next in line for dance team captain and has the popular boyfriend. But when it comes to other girls, she’s more frenemy than friend.
When circumstances bring the girls together over the course of a semester, they surprise everyone (especially themselves) by realizing that they might have more in common than they ever imagined.
A story about unexpected friendship, romance, and Texas-size girl power, this is another winner from Julie Murphy.

"I pre-ordered Puddin' because I LOVED Dumplin'! I am so glad I did! I teach high school ELA, and my co-teacher and I are building a class library so our students have CHOICE READING every day. You better believe multiple copies of Murphy's books are set to be available! This book moved me in ways the first didn't, and that surprised me. There is realism in this story that I know from experience. Some of my favorite lines include:
"My magic truth--the thing that has changed everything for me--is this: the body I have shouldn't change how deserving I am of my dreams." (p.57) (this one gave me all the feels)
"But I kinda wonder what it feels like to love something so much that you're even happy to fail at it." (p. 329) (this one hit me right in my heart)
"He smells like deodorant and sour-cream chips. And somehow, I'm really into it. Boys are straight-up sorcery." (p.363) (made me laugh!)
I know I have students that will relate to the characters in this book, and I can hardly wait to share my love of PUDDIN' with my class!"

Puddin' Dumplin' Julie Murphy Books Reviews
- Even if you pick up Puddin' and haven't read Julie Murphy's previous novel Dumplin', you're sure to leave the table satisfied. Millie Michalchuk is one of two protagonists in this young adult novel that in alternating chapters with Callie Reyes tells a tale of competition, winning, losing, making good and bad decisions, family, and most of all the power of female friendships with total acceptance of one another, blooms and thorns in all.
Millie is a fat high school junior. Don't worry, she does not think of "fat" as anything but a descriptor because it does not define who she is. Her essence is Millie, with her good heart, her optimism, her intelligence, her sense of humor, and her loyalty. She faces foes daily in many ways, such as when a boorish classmate oinks whenever she passes near his vicinity. Working hard at being a top student, hanging out with friends, having a secret crush, and deciding not to attend Daisy Ranch this upcoming summer frame her days and nights while she also holds down a part time job at her uncle's boxing gym.
Callie Reyes is a classmate of Millie, but from an entirely different social sphere, one of the dance team's major candidate for captain her senior year. Callie has been a 'Queen Bee' for so long that she has never learned how to be a girl's girlfriend, instead learning how to look out only for herself over time. Until now.
As an adult long gone from high school, I enjoy young adult novels when they are well written, have compelling characters, have a few twists, and don't push typical teen stereotypes. Julie Murphy does a fine job in writing a story with real people at the center, not just another tale of a fat girl. In fact, other than the few times Millie has to deal with others' prejudices and name calling, or her own insecurity, a reader wouldn't necessarily consider her size or think of her as that. Don't get me wrong, when it is important for the reader to understand or empathize, Murphy pulls no punches in using the f-word. I think just about any teen girl would enjoy this story and possibly even learn a bit about friendship and acceptance. - I pre-ordered Puddin' because I LOVED Dumplin'! I am so glad I did! I know I have students that will relate to the characters in this book, and I can hardly wait to share my love of PUDDIN' with my class! - I read and loved Dumplin, so I was expecting some of the same exhilarating "fat girl wins big time" stuff from Puddin', but while it had some great moments, the protagonist was willfully and ridiculously naive and innocent, while the antagonist, the "popular" girl fulfilled every cliche of the mean girl you can think of. Also, Millie's "solution" to being bullied and harassed for her size was cute, but would have been completely ineffective 40 years ago when I was a teenager, and I can't imagine that bullies and jocks and cruel teachers have gotten any kinder since the 70s. I would bet trying to being kind and sweet to them would only illicit a more violent verbal and physical response, leaving the victim open to more pain and suffering. So, while I laud the book for being a fun and interesting read, with clean prose and an easy plot, I can't really say that I'd wholeheartedly recommend it to those "outcasts" and misfits who are treated to bullying every day of their school career. Especially the fat girls, who are looking for acceptance, help, answers or ideas to make their lives easier, to inspire them to keep going until things get better.
- This is the sequal to Dumplin, supposedly. At the beginning of the book, you're saying "huh" because the characters that were minor in Dumplin are now the main characters and vice versa. However, as you read on, you get hooked and it is a great read. Now that Dumplin the movie has come out and it features the minor characters more than the book did (in my opinion) it all fits in together. My recommendation is read Dumplin the book, see Dumplin the movie, then read Puddin the book - in that order. Hopefully, there will be a Puddin movie too for us to see. Oh, don't forget to buy Dolly's Dumplin Soundtrack through too - it's great also. It is mainly for teenagers but I'm 75 and think they are all great as there are lessons, fun and tears for all of us! - 4/5. I enjoyed this book. I really like Millie's personality; she was different from many from many heroines in that she is always positive and sweet and has such heart. Callie was very much a misunderstood character and I didn't really like at her first, but she grew on me. I just wanted her to accept kindness that was coming her way. I liked how really both Millie and Callie both became their own-selves. I also liked the focus on female friendships and how important they are; it's to see in YA. This book was hard to start off, but then I was invested to see what was going to happen. The love interests, Mitch and Malik, were so swoony and I loved them so much. It also cool to see the characters from the companion novel in this book, specifically Willowdean and Bo, ugh so cute. Overall, I thought it was a enjoyable book about acceptance of others and female friendships.
